Isma'il, may God be pleased with him, who went with the
companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
when they were sent on a mission (to Makkah), he said, "Who
are these?" They said, "Abdullah, Abu Bakr, Umar and
Uthman." He said, "I have not any doubt about these except
that of one of them (Uthman)." He said, "O Abu Bakr! What
do you say?" He said, "I heard the Prophet say, 'I swear by
the Lord of this city, Hadith, Mu'akkadah, Rasul, and
Shirk.'" He said, "O Umar! What do you say?" He said, "O
Uthman! What do you say?" He said, "The report is authentic
that one of them is a liar, Hadith and Mu'akkadah. The other
is a liar and a cheat. And the third one is a liar and an
infidel. And he (O Abu Bakr) is from among us." He said, "O
Abu Bakr! What do you say?" He said, "O Umar! What do you
say?" He said, "I heard the Prophet say, 'And if I had not
departed from the people of Makkah, they would not have
slain me.'" He said, "O Uthman! What do you say?" He said,
"He said that to the people, as well as to the companions of
the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him."
